In addition to its scenic beauty, Kemaro Island holds mystical stories. The name of the island itself comes from the word "kemarau," which means dry season, as the island never sinks or gets submerged even when the Musi River is high.
The origin of Kemaro Island is also associated with the love story of Siti Fatimah and Tan Bun An.
Siti Fatimah was said to be a descendant of the Sriwijaya Kingdom who embraced Islam, while Tan Bun An, the son of a Chinese king, followed the Buddhist faith.
Despite their different beliefs and ethnicities, it did not hinder them from building a relationship that eventually led to marriage. Tan Bun An then brought his beloved to his homeland to seek his parents' blessing.
Upon arriving in Palembang, Tan Bun An wanted to see the gold gifts inside the jar given by his parents. However, to his surprise, he found rotten vegetables inside.
In Kemaro Island, you can witness this love story firsthand through the graves and inscriptions found there.
